Downes’ talks are an unexhaustible source of interesting ideas. In the talk already mentioned (#36), slides 38 ff cover Learning Object Metadata whose poor pedagogical data fields have been criticized and were suggested to be considerably expanded (see chapter 2 of this article).
Downes’ approach allows for different user types. These are supposed to rate the various learning objects such that, subsequently, users with similar profiles (“neighborhood users“) might have these objects recommended to them automatically by “recommender systems”.
A very promising approach, especially when combined with the OLS (#32) mentioned earlier.
